Electronic Filing of ALL Qualified Federal and

State Income Tax Returns

The 2008 tax season is rapidly approaching. We are implementing a few changes for this upcoming tax season that we wanted to make you aware of.

We will be electronically filing all qualified 2008 Federal and State Tax Returns. You will not be receiving paper copies of your returns to sign and file with the respective government offices. You will receive one sheet for the Federal and another sheet for each state returns. These must be signed and returned to us before we can electronically file your returns, so please return these quickly. These sheets can be transmitted by fax, e-mail or US mail. Any tax that you owe to the government or refund that the government owes to you, can be directly debited from or credited to your bank account respectively. If you choose a direct debit the tax due will be withdrawn on April 15, 2008, unless otherwise specified. Since the returns are processed electronically, direct deposit refunds are received much quicker.

Statistically speaking, one of the most common reasons that tax returns are rejected from e-filing is an individual’s name not matching their social security number with the Social Security Administration.

Example: An individual may get married and start using her husband’s last name but never have changed it with the Social Security Administration. Their records still show her using her maiden name. This return would be rejected. She would have two options – either change it with the Social Security Administration prior to filing a return for 2007 or file the 2007 tax return using her maiden name.

If this scenario or one similar occurs and your tax returns for 2007 need to be extended solely for this reason, there will be an extra fee. Please ensure that we have your correct name and social security number according to the Social Security Administration records. (If necessary, you can update your records in person or by mail with the Social Security Administration. Please refer to http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html for more information.)

For the most part, this new filing requirement will only affect our internal processing procedures. As a result, we will be requiring some additional information from each taxpayer. We previously sent to all of our clients a sheet with the required additional information for you to complete and return to us by fax at (818) 999-6344; if you have not received a copy, please click here for a PDF copy. This will help us to provide a more orderly transition and insure that we have the information that we will need when we are ready to electronically file the return. Please take a couple of minutes to complete and return it to us at this time.

Additionally this year, you will be receiving your personal copy of the returns filed for 2007 by email as a PDF file. (PDF files can be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may obtain a free copy on the internet at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. Simply type this address into your browser’s address bar and follow the instructions outlined to install it to your computer.) This will enable you to have your 2007 tax returns stored on your computer or the compact disc for quick and easy future reference or printing as needed. This will save you space in storage and time in handling. If you do not have a computer or must have a printed copy of your return for some other reason, please let us know.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Lisa Calabrese at 818.712.0300 ext 19 or lcalabrese@pkcpas.com.
